My beer journey started out like many other beer drinkers, as a formality of being a broke college student. Since we had a lack of funds we sought the most cost effective way to catch a buzz and beer was the perfect thing for the job (without going the route of cheap liquor in plastic bottles). Since beer was totally new to me, naturally beers like Bud Light and Miller were what I went with first, but it wasn’t until I was out with co-workers at my first out of college gig that I discovered that beer could actually taste good.
Like many craft beer lovers I’ve talked to, Oberon a seasonal citrus forward wheat by Bells Brewery, was my gateway to craft beer. Just knowing that I can actually enjoy the flavor of a beer led me to seek out and try every beer that I could. I started trying beers at spots I already frequented, and then ventured out to new spots and breweries. The more beers I tried, the more I got well versed in the styles I liked and did not like. Initially I only gravitated toward wheats, belgians, and stouts/porters, I did not find my love for IPAs until I came across ones that actually had flavorful hops instead of just being taste bud killers. I slowly but surly got into sours with the help of a bartender friend that would give me samples of whatever ones they had on tap at the moment. This allowed me to discover what types and flavor profiles of sours that I would enjoy. Just recently I’ve come to enjoy certain pilsners (mostly of the hoppy variety) and Kolsches. In the past I avoided these styles because just the sight of them reminded me of my light beer days in college.
Over the years craft beer has become a huge part of my life. I love to use beer as a way to meet and connect with others, so I decided to start this blog to connect with other beer lovers, allow others to gain more knowledge about the craft, and with so many beers out there…. just to give recommendations on what is good. I hope this serves as a tool to help other beer lovers on their journey. Cheers
